In light of ongoing developments with the Coronavirus, we’re making further changes to the way we provide bereavement support to our clients.

We have suspended face-to-face bereavement support for the foreseeable future. Instead, our support for both new and existing clients will be by telephone only. This change includes our support services for both Adults and Children & Young People.

Our enquiry line (668191) for new referrals will be open from 9am-12 noon every weekday, with voicemail being available at all other times. Our Administration team are working from home and will respond to any messages as soon as they can, hopefully within 24 hours.

At the moment, we have a waiting time of around two weeks until one of our Bereavement Volunteers is likely to become available. However, we hope it’s understandable that this waiting time may change.

Cruse Bereavement Isle of Man update on services with regard to Coronavirus

Although currently as at 13th March at there are no confirmed cased in the Isle of Man, we need to minimise the risk to our clients, volunteers and staff. Cruse have a very broad base of clients, many of whom are vulnerable therefore we feel this is a necessary precautionary measure.

With immediate effect we are temporalily adapting the way we provide our Children and Young People's service.

• Visits to schools (includes bereavement support and other activities) and CruzKids social activities are suspended
• Face to face bereavement support sessions outside school will continue, prioritised on a case by case basis

Face to face bereavement support session for adults are unaffected and sessions will continue to take place at your home or at our office.

We are very proud of Lizzy and Zoe, CruzKids members, who have both graduated from university this month. Both Lizzy and Zoe have also raised funds for Cruse in the past - Lizzy ran the Great North Run and Zoe did the Parish Walk.

Please read their stories below.

Lizzy

Lizzy's older sister, Eleanor, died in 2007 of a rare condition called Wegener's Granulomatosis. Lizzy was only 11 years old and described how she sometimes felt really angry, sometimes really sad and that she felt like there was a big hole inside. Soon after Eleanor's death Lizzy started receiving 1-2-1 support with Cruse and over the years has been a regular and enthusiastic supporter of the CruzKids programme. She is pictured recently at her graduation ceremony at Northumbria University where she received a 1st Class Honours Degree in Occupational Therapy, describing her career choice because she simply "wants to help people".

Zoe

Zoe's dad died of Multiple Myeloma, a cancer of the bone marrow when she was only nine years old. As is the case with many children, as Zoe approached teenage years the reality of her loss really hit her and she sought support from Cruse to help her deal with the new feelings she was experiencing. Zoe was pleased when the CruzKids programme was set up and she realised that she was not alone. Zoe is shown at her graduation ceremony at the University of East Anglia, where she received a 1st Class Honours in Drama. She is an accomplished actress, but Zoe has a strong desire to help those less fortunate than herself and in September continues her studies at Southampton, training to be a Special Needs teacher.

Well done on your achievement girls, you really both are amazing!

At an event at The Regency Hotel in Douglas yesterday, the End of Life Matters working group launched their new booklet, entitled Putting Your House in Order.

The End of Life Matters initiative, which Cruse Bereavement Care Isle of Man is part of, encourages everyone, regardless of age or health, to take simple steps to make their end of life experience better; for themselves and for their family and friends.

The new booklet gives guidance on the things that should be considered and planned for at the end of your life. The free booklet will be available from many places around the Island, including Cruse Bereavement Care Isle of Man, Hospice Isle of Man and Kirk Braddan, and can also be found on our End of Life Matters page.

To coincide with the launch of this booklet, Cruse also launched a companion booklet entitled My End of Life Plan, which is designed to help your family and friends know and understand your wishes, and where to find your important information and documents. This booklet can also be found on our website.

A pack containing a paper version of these booklets, as well as other supporting documentation is available from our office. If you would like to receive a copy, please let us know.

We are very proud of this booklet and the End of Life Matters initiative and are sure that many people will find it a useful resource.
